Oktoberfest kicks off in Munich after 2 year break Oktoberfest kicks off in Munich after 2 year break-Pictorial Report

Famous German beer festival in full swing with no restrictions or mask rules

MUNICH: Oktoberfest, the famed German beer festival that draws millions of visitors from around the world, opened on Saturday in Munich after a two-year pause due to the coronavirus pandemic. This is occuring Amid economic pressure, beer prices at the event are about 15% higher than in 2019.

In its 200-year history, the world’s biggest folk festival has been cancelled just 26 times, mostly due to World Wars I and II but also twice because of cholera outbreaks.
The Oktoberfest is back after two years of hiatus due to the COVID pandemic and the famed German beer festival in full swing with no restrictions or mask rules!

The last time the festival was held in 2019, the 6.3 million guests drank more than 7.3 million litres of German beer.
The Festival will run until Oct 3 .

Germans are among Europe's heaviest beer drinkers, with an annual average consumption of 84 liters in 2021

Revelers in Munich were running in traditional Bavarian clothing early Saturday morning to secure a spot at the first Oktoberfest in two years.

It is the world's biggest folk festival.
*"Munich Mayor Didier Reiter opened this year's ceremony with three knocks of a hammer and inserting the tap in the first keg, with the traditional cry of "O'zapft is (it's tapped)."Reiter then offered the first tankard to Markus Söder, the head of the regional government.

Other traditional events around the Wiesn are also on the program again: the parade of the Wiesnwirte onto the festival grounds, the large procession of traditional costumes and marksmen on the first Sunday of the Oktoberfest, the stand-up concert under the Bavaria or the firecracker shooting.

Visitors from across Germany and around the world can enjoy the heavy beer mugs, fat-dripping sausages and pretzels the size of dinner plates at the Munich Oktoberfest until October 3.

FINE WINES-FINE MOMENTS The Roots run deep at Conn FINE WINES-FINE MOMENTS
The Roots run deep at Connoisseur Magazine as do the vines in Rehigau-I reviewed a range of BALTHASAR RESS Riesling Wines and their relevance to the Singapore Straits Kitchen more than 10 years ago,..and finally got to visit the Weingut Balthasar Ress in Hattenheim in the beautiful Rheingau region last week...Unfortunately the harvest was delayed by showers for a few days.. so I didn't pick any grapes,.. BUT,.. I did get to taste a Full range of their wines under the expert tutelage of their knowledgeable Sommelier DOMINIC NEBEL and must say I was pretty blown away by the purity and sophistication of these wines. Some of the older wines I thought,.. would have been reserved for my future visit to Heaven,.. but I managed to taste them already on earth,..LOL! Together with Tim KNAUER ,.we then went for a "spin around the vineyards" and tasted some grapes on the vine ,.and I must say they are looking amazingly full and healthy and tightly compact Riesling bunches and amazingly large and juicy SpatBurgunder grapes ,..I can also report that the Rhine is full of water again and full of fish too! Tim showed me around the Cellar and we tried some great Barrell samples including a nicely ageing Pinot Noir in French oak ,..but the Rieslings are divine...and using some 25 % oak imparts a nice complexity.
Frankfurt is much more than the Flughafen and the Frankfurt is much more than the Flughafen and the European Bank! Had an amazing visit to Frankfurt recently and discovered a charming New old Town(Neu Altstadt) comprising many architectural monument because this quarter was reconstructed (completely destroyed during second worl war) and only really finished in 2017 ! It is located about 4 stops on the Tram from the Frankfurt Hauptbahnoff ,..where you can purchase a copy of the iconic Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper hot of the press ! The Old Town has some amazing buildings,Bars and Cafes and Sauares not to mention art Galkeries and cultural institutions . My favourite buildings around the Romerberg centre are Goldene Waage and Don Romer ,..I discovered some great Cafes and a Balthazar Res Winebar - very cool and sophisticated for classic Rheingau wines !
Ukrainian artist Iryna Fedorenko exhibiting at Gal Ukrainian artist Iryna Fedorenko exhibiting at Gallerini in Munich

Your erstwhile correspondent attended an exhibition in Munich's Schwabing district yesterday whic is of special interst because it is by Ukrainian artist Iryna Fedorenko. Iryna has been in Munich for almost six months and this exhibition captures many aspects of the Ukrainian soul,..as Iryna "focusses on portraits and is especially fascinated by eyes. capturing the deep look of her fellow Ukrainians and people in general ,.is an endless source of inspiration for her. Of course the humanity and human condition that she portrays in her art,..and the distinctly Ukrainian vibrations resonates with a German audience at this particular time.

Of all European nations,..Germany has been especially welcoming and supportive to the Ukrainian people,.. assisting them with special resettlement packages and with various Government assistance and Grants ,, to facilitate their establishing new lives away from the war torn Ukraine.

"Iryna Fedorenko is one of the most famous Ukrainian artists with over 20 years of creative experience. In the past three years her works have been displayed in more than 50 exhibitions in museums and galleries in Europe, USA and Asia under her creative alias Semira.

Born in Mariupol she lived and worked in Kyiv until she fled Ukraine at the beginning of the war. She now lives with her son and mother in Munich."

Children of War - Series
After narrowly escaping the bombing of her home town Mariupol in March 2022, she started to depict this historic moment by creating the “Children of War” series that beautifully expresses the astonishment und incredulity about the war in Ukraine.

All paintings are acrylic on canvas and have been created in 2022.

Iryna Fedorenko is best known for her impressive portraits of private individuals and celebrities.

In spite of the Aussie type summer the Riesling gmvines on the steeper slopes can survive because of their 16 metre long root systems that guarantee them moisture in the driest times !
Still amazingly warm and sunny in the Alsace regi Still amazingly warm and sunny in the Alsace region and Wine Growers are hoping for more rain before the september "Vendage" commences,..so after a busy holiday weekend, with hundreds of European Tourists visiting this extremely picturesque wine region,.. I was lucky enough to Taste some great Aromatic wines at Hugel and DOPFF,.. and some excellent Alsacienne Cremant at DOPFF ,which is getting better with more complexity and Finesse every year .The Pinot Noir is also improving as a result of ,.. global warming. But you all know the wonderful mainstays of Alsace haven't gone anywhere Riesling (and aged Riesling) "to die for,"..Pinot Gris ,.Gewurtztraminer,..and the captivating and seductive blends such as Hugel Gentil . The aged Rieslings like Dopff au Moulin Alsace Grand Cru Shoenenbourg Riesling however, are a showstopper!
MODERNE GALERIE Saarbrücken specializes in Instal MODERNE GALERIE Saarbrücken specializes in Installations -but has an impressive Permanent Collection
Had the good fortune of visiting this amazing and "hugely underrated" gallery a couple of days ,..The MODERNE GALERIE Saarbrücken is one of the leading museums in south-west Germany and is the leading museum institution in the Saarland. Characterized by its location near the border, its rich holdings from Impressionism to the present unfold in dialogue, particularly between French and German movements. On my recent visit to Saarbrucken I was amazed by the diverse collections together with the current modern installations. This Art Museum is well known for it its Modern contemporary Installations, but probably does not get enough recognition for its Permanent Exhibition,.comprising numerous rooms with assembled art collections that one wouldn't have expected to find here.Well worth a visit if you are in Germany or anywhere near the border.
