Announcement from  UNIONE ITALIANA VINI: ERNESTO ABBONA CONFIRMED AS PRESIDENT

The Association elected its new Executive Board and it is ready to face the hot topics of the three-year period 2019-2022

Milan, 5 July 2019 –

“With enthusiasm and high sense of responsibility I accept to continue this important mandate. I thank the outgoing Board for the work carried out and the new Board for the trust I have been given. In the next three years, we expect great challenges at national and international level, but UIV is ready to face them. Our strength is a wealth of knowledge, skills and cooperation reinforced also by the contribution of “Movimento Turismo del Vino”, “Donne del Vino” and the scientific world which we put at the service not only of enterprises, but also of institutions and of wine production chain, to facilitate the identification of technical, regulatory and political decisions capable of meeting the challenges of the sector. In Rome, Paris and Brussels, we will continue to take part in all institutional meeting tables of the sector and in the international organisations, so that the voice of our companies can be heard”.

These are the words of Ernesto Abbona, re-elected as President of Unione Italiana Vini on the 27th of June in Milan. The President will be supported by the Assistant Vice-President, Lamberto Frescobaldi and by the Vice- President, Sandro Sartor, who will lead the Federation of Wine Trade and Industry.

In a delicate situation for the sector and in a complex economic-political context for Italy and the European Union, the choice of the council to operate in a logic of continuity is an expression of the goodness of the work done in the last period, which has laid concrete foundations for the works planned in the three-year period 2019-2022. There are indeed many open topics.

At an international level, we range from the post-2020 CAP, whose budget is linked to the one of wine, to international agreements such as the recently signed EU-Mercosur Treaty, for which details of the results of the wine sector are expected.
The national front is equally articulated. Important amendment proposals will regard the Consolidated Act on Vine and Wine (Law 238), the revision of the number of designations and the development of wine tourism, with the study of global strategies to be adopted, in order to give businesses a real opportunity for growth. In addition, from a promotional point of view, the Association will continue the work of the ‘technical table’ set up with Agenzia Ice, to improve the activities supporting Italian wine in the markets with higher added value, in the developing markets and in Europe, in order to strengthen the positioning of “Made in Italy” products.

“The challenges of the future, however, are not only on the shelves or between the lines of EU regulations – stresses President Ernesto Abbona – but are called “environmental sustainability” and “climate change”.

For this reason, we are ready to give our expert contribution to the path started by Mipaaft on the harmonization of an Italian definition of sustainable wine, which must be supported by a reliable system of certifications and controls and extended to the European level. Finally, we will continue our battles to preserve the image and culture of wine and, together with Ceev-Comité Vins, we will work on the new phase of Wine in Moderation*, which will soon be relaunched.

The three-years period that expects us will certainly be challenging, but I know I can count on a Board capable of teaming up in any situation, confirming Unione Italiana Vini as the main institutional point of reference for the world of wine at the national level”.

*Wine in Moderation is the information campaign addressed to consumers, conceived to foster a conscious consumption of wine during meals, on convivial occasions and as accompaniment to food, as in the tradition of the Mediterranean countries.
