This smart hotel restaurant is a confident and assured operation with its imposing high ceilings, rich colours and walnut paneling, “Brasserie Roux” looks the part for serious business. An appealing menu, created by Albert Roux, majors in classic brasserie fare, so diner might start with ballotine of foie gras, French beans & toasted brioche and move on to cassoulet of duck, or else there’s a smattering of more unusual dishes such as pike quenelle with mushroom and lobster sauce. An excellent value £15 set menu at lunch and pre-theatre ensures a steady flow of diners throughout the day. Complaints focus on the fact that service can slip during busy periods and that tables are tightly packed, so let staff know if you need privacy.
The design theme throughout the brasserie focuses on a young rooster – the coat of arms of the building’s former owners, “Cox & Kings”, and the symbol of France. The interior designer, Pierre-Yves Rochon, has created an elegant atmosphere with buttercup yellow walls and contemporary furniture upholstered in dark green and red fabrics. Three 15ft arched windows dressed with matching pale yellow and white American blinds overlook Pall Mall and Waterloo Place and help create a stunningly spacious yet refined area in which to enjoy honest Brasserie cuisine created by one of the world’s most famous chefs.
